Georgian Heraldry & The Prince Title of Karalashvili

The Karalashvili name carries not only a winemaking legacy but also noble heritage. In the 16th century, King George VII of Kakheti recognized the family's contributions to Georgian culture and viticulture, granting them noble status "Prince" and an official coat of arms, a rare honor in Georgian history.

The Karalashvili family crest, still preserved today, is a testament to:
-
Loyalty to the Kingdom of Kakheti
-
The family's historical role as wine guardian
-
The responsibility to protect and continue Georgia’s ancient winemaking traditions

This title was more than a mark of nobility, it was a duty. It placed Karalashvili among the custodians of Georgian heritage, ensuring that qvevri winemaking would survive for generations.

Today, Karalashvili 1396 continues to honor that responsibility, crafting wines with the same royal standards, respect for tradition, and deep connection to history.
The Seventh Generation – Lasha Karalashvili’s Vision
At the heart of Karalashvili 1396 today is Lasha Karalashvili, the seventh-generation winemaker, who has taken his family’s heritage and brought it into the modern era while preserving its authenticity and exclusivity.

Born into a family where wine was more than a business, it was a way of life, Lasha grew up surrounded by qvevris, vineyards, and the stories of his ancestors.

He made it his mission to:
-
Protect traditional qvevri winemaking, ensuring it remains untouched by mass production.
-
Craft wines in limited quantities, available only at the historic Karalashvili Wine Cellar.
-
Share Georgia’s wine culture with the world, offering an immersive experience to every guest.

Under his guidance, Karalashvili wines are no longer just family treasures, they are exclusive expressions of history, available to those who seek something truly rare.

A Family Legacy – Lasha & His Grandfather
×´My grandfather taught me that wine is not just something we drink, it is a living thing, a story in itself. He would run his hands over the qvevris and say, ‘A great winemaker is one who listens to his wine, just as he listens to his elders.’
Everything I know, I learned from him.×´
